Adopt a Pet

bluepaw_03 ADOPT A PET

Chesapeake Humane Society has many adoptable pets looking for their forever homes. Our cats are free-roaming within the adoption center so it’s easy to drop by to see their personalities. All of our dogs are in loving foster homes. Please scroll down to view our adoptable pets on our Petfinder feed or visit our Petfinder page.

Our adoption fees (listed below) help to cover a fraction of the cost of providing food, shelter, and veterinary care for our adoptable pets. CHS does not profit from these adoption fees.

Kittens (Less than 6 months): $100, Cats: $75 – includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, FVRCP vaccine, FIV/FeLV combo test, de-worming, flea/tick treatment, and veterinary exam.

Puppies and Dogs: $175 – includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, distemper vaccine, heartworm test, de-worming, flea/tick treatment, veterinary exam, and introductory class at Happy Paws Humane Pet Training Center.

How to Adopt a Pet

Step 1: Determine the pet that is best for your lifestyle. Since your new pet will be with you for the rest of its life, this is an important commitment that should not be rushed! If needed, our adoption counselors are happy to guide you and help you find your perfect fit.

Step 2: Select your pet and complete the  adoption application. Filling out an application does not obligate you to adopt. Submit your application online or at the Humane Society.

Step 3: Once your application is approved, we can schedule any additional meet-and-greets (if needed).

Step 4: Provide a loving new home for your new addition to the family!  We encourage you to keep in touch with us – we love receiving updates and if you ever need advice, we are here to help!

I'm nothing to sneeze at but after a year in a home they returned me because they said that's what I made them do. Whatever their excuse I'm still the same loving lady I was a year ago and I'm hoping my third family will be the charm! If you'd like to visit me I'm currently residing at the kitty apartments at Petco, 237 Hanbury Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23322. Volunteers are there from 9-10:30am and 6:30-8:30pm Monday thru Saturday and 10-11:30am and 5-7pm on Sunday. If you would like more information regarding this pet please email adoptions@chesapeakehumane.org or call 757-546-5355.

Ellie recently arrived in foster care (she was previously cared for by our partners at Chesapeake Animal Services). Reports from her foster folks are that she is doing great! Recovering well from her spay, getting to know everyone, and working really hard on her potty training and doing well at it! Ellie is heartworm positive and requires treatment. We are working on getting that started. She is available for adoption if adopters are willing and able to provide her what she needs for treatment and recovery. Adopters will be required to pay a portion of the fee for her treatment. If you would like more information regarding this pet please email operations@chesapeakehumane.org or call 757-546-5355.

I was abandoned on the porch here last December. I was adopted on New Year's Eve. Now I'm back. Evidently there were some issues in my adopted home that upset me. The folks here have helped me get back to my old, loving self and I am hoping for a second chance with a loving, understanding adopter.
